November 27, 2018 by Danny Karlic

Quick Home Remedies to Get Rid of Fruit Flies

Fruit flies can be rather annoying, especially since you usually find them hanging out around your kitchen. They are not only annoying but can be unsanitary. Fortunately, there are easy ways you can do to get rid of these tiny winged invaders.

Fruit Flies

What Are They and What Do They Look?

Fruit flies are part of a family of small flies that has approximately 3,000 species. Although they’re not harmful and don’t spread diseases and bacteria, their presence is disturbing. Any small sweet stains or spilled juice can be a breeding area for fruit flies as they can lay up to 500 eggs at a time. They can breed quickly if they find the right environment and their entire lifespan is only two weeks.

Fruit flies have a set of horns and they are small in size but can be a big problem when there is an infestation of them. Some of them are 3 mm while others are slightly larger. They have black and gray abdomens and are brown and (yellowish) beige in color. The color depends on the type of species of fruit flies that you are dealing with; Mediterranean, Western Cherry, Caribbean, Olive or Mexican fruit fly.

Prevention Tips and Natural Ways to Get Rid of Fruit Flies

If you want to make sure you’ll be able to keep flies away from your home is to take preventative measures.  Follow these steps:

  • Keep Your Windows and Doors Closed

Keeping your windows and doors closed during the spring and autumn when they appear to be the most active. It is also helpful to place screens over your windows, vents, and doors.

  • Clean Your Home

If you have trashcans sitting around your home, clean them regularly and closed at all times. After cooking or if anything is spilled on your countertops, thoroughly wipe down the countertop to prevent flies.

apples and apple cider vinegar

  • Fruit Fly Traps

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Pour a little apple cider vinegar into a glass. Cover the opening in plastic wrap and seal it with a rubber band. Poke a hole on the plastic to allow them enter into the glass. Fruit flies hate the scent of vinegar and they can’t come out of the glass once inside.

2. Vinegar and Dish Soap

If the plastic wrap makes them unmoved, try a different method:  add two to three drops of dish soap to a bowl of vinegar and just leave it uncovered. The scent of the dish soap will attract fruit flies and make them drown.

Spider Infestations

Spider Infestations:

Habit and How They Get Into Your Home

A spider is generally described as having two body parts, eight legs, without wings or antennae. There are some spiders that will seek out moist areas to live in, such as basements, damp buildings or crawl spaces.

wolf spider crawling on the wall
Wolf Spider

While still others prefer dry areas, such as the upper areas of a room or attic. They often hide in dark parts of whichever room they occupy.

If you are like most people, you don’t want spiders around. Many homes may be infested with them without your knowledge of this.

Since they like to hide in dark areas, it is unlikely that you’ll come across them unless you are moving something around and happen upon them.

At Nassau County Pest Control, we are able to help with the extermination of an infestation of spiders.

How They Get Into Your Home

There are generally two ways for spiders to get into a home, through doors and windows without properly seals or worn seals or from something that you bring into your home, such as empty boxes.

When they come into your home through a window or door, they are usually seeking out their prey. They are what some in the industry call ‘hitchhikers’. They will attach themselves to your clothing, boxes, bags, or anything else, to gain access inside your home.

Once inside, they can begin to reproduce, thus causing you to have an infestation. We would suggest that if you see a spider, kill it!

You never know if that one is there, whether or not there are others. You wouldn’t want them to reproduce while in your home this could make the problem more complicated than it is.

When they come into your home through a window or door, they are usually seeking out their prey. They are what some in the industry call ‘hitchhikers’.

When they begin to reproduce, the problem can begin to spread to other parts of your home. This means that when they begin to spread, our exterminators will have to determine the source and eliminate it. The source is what keeps the spiders inside your home.

By removing this, we can begin to control and get rid of your spider infestation. The methods used to exterminate your spider infestation depends on the type of spider.***

Signs Of Bed Bugs In Nassau County

March 9, 2018 by Tom

Signs of Bed Bugs in Nassau County

Bed bug problems have been one of the most common pest issues in Nassau County. Since the pests are extremely good at hiding, they catch the residents in the area unaware. Knowing the signs of bed bugs in Nassau County to watch out for is important for their timely treatment. The common question among many people regarding these pets is “ how do I know if there are bed bugs in my home or business?

These are some of the indicators for signs of bed bugs in Nassau County:

Small Exoskeletons

Signs of Bed Bugs in Nassau County

After hatching from the egg stage, a bed bug becomes a nymph which is simply a young bed bug. As the nymph develops to maturity, it molts (shed its skin) five times before it becomes an adult. When your place has a bed bug infestation, these shells will normally be found in the hangout joints of the bugs which mostly comprise of inside box springs and along the seams of a mattress in the joints of your furniture, among other tiny hidden voids especially in bedrooms. The exoskeletons are light colored, look like empty bed bugs or small popcorn kernels and their lengths range from 2.55mm to 4.5mm.

Tiny white eggs/eggshells

The eggs laid by bed bugs are translucent or pearly white and covered with a shiny film to enable them to attach themselves firmly to surfaces. These eggs are very small, approximately a millimeter long and can be seen by your naked eyes but a magnifying glass would be of greater help. The presence of such eggs on the edges of your mattress or in the joints of a bed or couch, bookshelf or chair indicates a possible bed bug infestation.

Oval-shaped, brownish live bugs

Mature bedbugs have oval-shaped bodies which are brownish in color when the bug has not fed recently and reddish brown if it fed a short moment ago. The size of an adult bug is almost that of an apple seed, approximately 4.5mm to 8mm. A bed bug neither jumps nor flies but move at a very swift speed. Coming across an adult bed bug at your home or business is a strong indication of a bedbug infestation.

Bed Bug Infestation

A musty, offensive smell

Bed bugs release a special chemical substance called pheromones when they are agitated as a way of communicating with each other. Pheromones have a musty odor which you may not catch a drift in case there are just one or a few bedbugs.  The smell, which is very unpleasant and likened to the odor of coriander, spoilt raspberries or moldy shoes/clothes, is easily detectable where an infestation is severe. Therefore, if your place has this smell, then you could be dealing with a serious bed bug problem.

bed bug mattress staining

Bright or reddish crawling bugs

Young bedbugs look the same as the adult ones, only that the former is lighter when it has not fed in the recent past and reddish when it has sucked blood minutes, hours or a few days ago. Nymphs are also smaller than adults. It is advisable that you call a professional bedbugs exterminator in case you bump on insects with the aforementioned description to clear your doubt on a possible bed bug infestation.

If You Notice Signs of Bed Bugs in Nassau County, Give Us A Call

You shouldn’t feel ashamed when you suspect that there are signs of bed bugs in your Nassau County home office as a result of seeing any of the above signs. You are not alone; many people have experienced the issue and came out of with their heads held high. All you need to do is to find a way to confirm if you are actually faced with a bed bug infestation or you are just confusing it with someone else. Preferably, let a qualified pest control professional Nassau County clear the doubt.

Do Bumble Bees Sting?

January 2, 2018 by cynthia

Do Bumble Bees Sting?

Nassau County Pest Control offers unmatchable pest control Nassau. Nassau County is a host of many pests, actually over a hundred types, and so, if you are a resident of this place, you need to have a reliable partner who will save you the agony of having them in areas where they are unwanted.

Bees are some of the most rampant pests in the county as well as New York City at large. In as much as bee insect is beneficial in the ecosystem due to the significant role it plays in plants’ cross-pollination, it isn’t always harmless. If they feel provoked, some bees can easily sting. Remember that there are various bee species and not all of them sting.

bee flying
Bumble Bee

The most common stinging bee types are the honey bees and the bumble bees. Here, we’ll have a detailed look at bumble bees. It is paramount to understand the common bee behaviors as well as their characteristics to live with them peacefully.

What Are the Characteristics of Bumble Bees?

Size

Bumble Bees are normally large, with their length usually ranging from 0.3 inches to 0.9 inches. Nevertheless, a bee of this type can grow to a maximum of 1.5 inches. Bees live in colonies, with a colony consisting of a queen, workers, and drones. A queen is a fertile female bee and is usually one in a colony.

Workers are sterile female bees whose work is to collect food (pollen and water) as well as feeding and the queen and the young bees. The size of a queen is two times that of a worker bee. Besides, worker bees protect their colonies, especially the queen bees. On the other hand, drones are male bees whose primary role in a colony is to fertilize the queen.

Color

There are different species of bumble bees and each of them comes with a distinct color. Not only that, bumble bees of the same species can have different colors even if they live in the same area. A bumble bee can be entirely black, and another one can be black with white or white stripes.

You can also see the same bee type with a black body and an orange tip in its abdomen. However, bumble bees generally have a fuzzy look due to the hairs in their abdomens. The hairs in a worker bee trap pollen and nectar which the bees then take to their colonies for food.

Stinging Capability

Since the major role of worker bees is to protect their colonies, they are given the capability to sting whenever they feel threatened. Fortunately, these bees are relatively docile while out of their hives collecting nectar and pollen but they’ll most likely turn out very violent when a person or something disrupts their nest.

For instance, a ball that strays as your kids play and hit bumblebee hive can wreak havoc in your home as a result of an attack by these bees. Unlike honey bee which dies after stinging once, a bumble bee can sting many times and won’t die when it stings.

“If you have a bumble bee hive and are worried about a possible attack by the bees, you should seek bumble bee hive removal service from a reputable expert. Don’t trust just anyone who claims to offer the relevant pest control service because you don’t want to gamble with the well-being of your loved ones.”

When it comes to a queen, she won’t stand another queen in her colony. Therefore, she can sting as well but only attacks a perceived competitor. Drones in a bumble bee colony don’t sting since their work is only to fertilize the queen.

How to Get Rid of Bumble Bees

If you have a bumble bee hive and are worried about a possible attack by the bees, you should seek bumble bee hive removal service from a reputable expert. Don’t trust just anyone who claims to offer the relevant pest control service because you don’t want to gamble with the well-being of your loved ones.
