mouse

We understand why some people think it’s easy to rid themselves of their pest problem. There are aisles of pest control products lining the aisles of many of your local stores. It stands to reason that if there are so many products to treat pest problems that they should work, to some degree.

You notice that the problem still exists. Again, unless you are treating the source, you will still have a pest problem.

nice home

A sure sign of an infestation is droppings (fecal matter) or small pallets. You may even recognize stains on the wall or ceiling. Do Bumble Bees Sting?

January 2, 2018 by cynthia

Do Bumble Bees Sting?

Nassau County Pest Control offers unmatchable pest control Nassau. Nassau County is a host of many pests, actually over a hundred types, and so, if you are a resident of this place, you need to have a reliable partner who will save you the agony of having them in areas where they are unwanted.

Bees are some of the most rampant pests in the county as well as New York City at large. In as much as bee insect is beneficial in the ecosystem due to the significant role it plays in plants’ cross-pollination, it isn’t always harmless. If they feel provoked, some bees can easily sting. Remember that there are various bee species and not all of them sting.

Bumble Bee

The most common stinging bee types are the honey bees and the bumble bees. Here, we’ll have a detailed look at bumble bees. It is paramount to understand the common bee behaviors as well as their characteristics to live with them peacefully.

What Are the Characteristics of Bumble Bees?

Size

Bumble Bees are normally large, with their length usually ranging from 0.3 inches to 0.9 inches. Nevertheless, a bee of this type can grow to a maximum of 1.5 inches. Bees live in colonies, with a colony consisting of a queen, workers, and drones. A queen is a fertile female bee and is usually one in a colony.

Workers are sterile female bees whose work is to collect food (pollen and water) as well as feeding and the queen and the young bees. The size of a queen is two times that of a worker bee. Besides, worker bees protect their colonies, especially the queen bees. On the other hand, drones are male bees whose primary role in a colony is to fertilize the queen.

Color

There are different species of bumble bees and each of them comes with a distinct color. Not only that, bumble bees of the same species can have different colors even if they live in the same area. A bumble bee can be entirely black, and another one can be black with white or white stripes.

You can also see the same bee type with a black body and an orange tip in its abdomen. However, bumble bees generally have a fuzzy look due to the hairs in their abdomens. The hairs in a worker bee trap pollen and nectar which the bees then take to their colonies for food.

Stinging Capability

Since the major role of worker bees is to protect their colonies, they are given the capability to sting whenever they feel threatened. Fortunately, these bees are relatively docile while out of their hives collecting nectar and pollen but they’ll most likely turn out very violent when a person or something disrupts their nest.

For instance, a ball that strays as your kids play and hit bumblebee hive can wreak havoc in your home as a result of an attack by these bees. Unlike honey bee which dies after stinging once, a bumble bee can sting many times and won’t die when it stings.

“If you have a bumble bee hive and are worried about a possible attack by the bees, you should seek bumble bee hive removal service from a reputable expert. Don’t trust just anyone who claims to offer the relevant pest control service because you don’t want to gamble with the well-being of your loved ones.”

When it comes to a queen, she won’t stand another queen in her colony. Therefore, she can sting as well but only attacks a perceived competitor. Drones in a bumble bee colony don’t sting since their work is only to fertilize the queen.

How to Get Rid of Bumble Bees

If you have a bumble bee hive and are worried about a possible attack by the bees, you should seek bumble bee hive removal service from a reputable expert. Don’t trust just anyone who claims to offer the relevant pest control service because you don’t want to gamble with the well-being of your loved ones.

At Nassau County Pest Control, we’ll use the safest and most effective method that leaves your area free from the risks of bumblebee stings. We’ll also give you further tips on how to coexist with bees. We are simply the best bee exterminator in Nassau.

Different Types of Bees Long Island

December 1, 2017 by Tom

Different Types of Bees

When something buzzes past your ear and is more significant than a fly, it is time to be cautious.  Thousands of people are rushed to the hospital every day because of stinging insects. Sting allergies are a common phenomenon, but in extreme cases can lead to death. It is thus essential to inspect your house regularly to ensure there are no hives or nests of bees and wasps. To determine the amount of caution you need to exercise, it is necessary for you to be aware of the different types of bees.

To bee or not to bee?

Bees are one of the most common types of stinging insects. There are different types of bees, and the stings of a few can be particularly dangerous. It is essential to identify the species of bees, in order to be alert, aware and safe. Knowing the type of bee will also help in determining the kind of medical help needed after a bee sting.

wasps in their nestDifferent types of bees –

  • Bumble Bees

Do bumblebees sting? Yes, and the pain can last for days. They can sting multiple times, in fact.  Even though they are beneficial insects and help in pollination, a bumble bee nest close to a building (they usually make nests in attics or under roof beams) can be a threat. Bumble bees are almost an inch long, with black with yellow stripes, and have a layer of fuzz on them.  If you see a bumble bee nest inside or outside your house, do not approach it or try to remove it yourself.

  • Carpenter Bees

These solitary insects are almost an inch long and resemble bumble bees except they have a shiny abdominal region.  Carpenter bees are usually found in decaying wood. These bees do not have a stinger (males), and the female carpenter bee does not usually sting (despite her stinger’s potency). However, carpenter bees can be territorial and can also cause structural damage.

  • Honey Bees (western honey bee species)bee on flower

These orange-brown ½ inch sized bees are not a threat unless their hive is attacked or disturbed. Honey bees are defensive and attack only when they feel their hive is in danger. It is necessary to either remove the hive or decide to learn how to manage or rear it afterward. The infamous “killer bee” is actually an Africanised honey bee ( a hybrid of the western honey bee species) and is not very commonly found in households, contrary to popular belief. These bees die after stinging, as their abdomen gets ripped off along with the stinger.

It is necessary to deal any kind of bee nest/hive in order to maintain safety within and around the house.

Are bees the only kind of common stinging insect? No…

What are hornets?

Hornets are a type of eusocial wasp that can have a painful sting.  There are different types of hornets –

    • Baldface Hornets

The black-bodied white-faced hornets have large nests found in exposed locations. Baldface hornets are beneficial insects, but if their nest is too close to humans, it can lead to risky situations. It is best to use external pest control to deal with such wasps.

    • European Hornets (Giant Hornets)

These 1 inch long hornets have brown and yellow stripes and a pale face. European hornets typically build paper carton nests, and their nests can be found in hollow trees, barns, and attics. They sting only when threatened, but when they do so, it is painful

mud dauber flying near a plant

    • Mud Daubers

They’re solitary black-with-pale-markings wasps. They construct mud nests under leaves, porch ceilings, barns, and attics. They are beneficial insects and can control the spider population, but mud daubers can pose a risk to humans if the nests are too close to the house.

    • Paper Wasp

Paper wasps are brown-colored wasps that use paper like substances to make their nests (hanging from trees and porch ceilings, behind doors, on railings, etc.). They are beneficial insects that can control many other pest species. If you find a paper wasp nest in your house, it is best not to touch it (as they can get defensive and sting). Call pest control for help!

    • Velvet Ants

Velvet ants are wasps that build nests in the sandy soil. The female velvet ant is hairy and black with patches of bright red, while her male counterpart is much less hairy and has wings. Their sting is very potent (they are called “cow killers”), which is why their nest is one that should be immediately dealt with (but not directly by you!).

bee colony on tree

    • Yellowjackets

These wasps have a black-and-yellow color pattern and live in nests of a paper carton.  They have both ground-based and aerial nests. Yellowjackets are slow to sting and are beneficial insects, but it is essential to keep them away from buildings and humans.

Different Types of Bees

We have looked at the different types of stinging insects, but remember never to take matters into your own hand. Do not charge in the case of stinging insects headlong!

So are you worried about stinging insects? Confused about how to deal with bees and wasps? Still unsure of whether or not the insects in your house are dangerous?

What’s Termites Role in the Ecosystem

November 22, 2017 by Tom

What is termites role in the ecosystem?

Silent destroyer, beastly bugs, pesky pets. These just a few of the terrible names we often give to describe termites. But if scientists are to be believed these tiny bugs are doing an excellent service to our environment. In fact, the New York Times recently refer to termites role in the ecosystem as the ‘Saviors of the Soil.’ That’s some honor for a half-an-inch long creature that till now was only a cause of nightmares for homeowners in NYC.

While we can not deny that termites cause more than $5 billion worth of damage in the United States every year, it is also now a known fact that these insects play a significant role in protecting the environment, not only in NYC but all over the world. Although 2,800 species of termites exist on the Earth, just a few are known to cause destruction.

termite

Termites Role in the Ecosystem:

Nature Warriors

Most termites role in the environment is very critical. Researchers from Princeton University have also discovered that the mounds made by termites can actually prevent the soil from becoming barren, especially in agricultural lands. The hills created by termites store moisture and nutrients, and this is the reason why plants tend to thrive around these mounds. It would not take long for dry areas to become deserts if the termite mounds did not exist. The holes dug by the termites into the ground allow the rain to soak deep into the soil rather than evaporating in the hot blazing sun.

Nourishing snack

Termites are high in proteins and fats. This is the reason why they are a nutritious and popular food choice for a number of animals, birds and even ants.

Recycling champions

According to specialists in this field, termites are actually one of the best recyclers on our planet. They are responsible for giving back nutrients to the soil in the rainforests. While the trees and other vegetation in the rainforest extract the nutrients from the soil, these green machines actually work hard to energise the soil. The bacteria present in the termites are able to extract nitrogen from the air and convert it into fertilizer. They digest the dead wood and put back the nutrients in the soil for more healthy plants to grow.

termite infestation

However, it is this very ability of the termites to digest any type of dead wood that causes so much destruction in our homes. After all, it is we who have built our homes with termite food. If a termite infestation is not noticed on time, the damage to your home can be much greater.

Termite Infestation Signs:

But how do you know if you have a termite infestation and would require pest control NYC?  Here are some of the signs to watch out for:

* Termite shelter tubes. They are clay-like in texture and brown in color.

* Termites working inside wood produce earthen cracking on the surface. This is mostly visible on the foundation walls or the joints.

* Audible tapping noise can be heard in places where there is a substantial infestation.

* Termites often burrow into would without coming to the surface. So, one should regularly check wooden floors and walls for any hollowness.

Nassau County Pest Control: Termites Role in Ecosystem

Keeping all the facts in mind, we should choose an environmentally responsible method of pest control. Nassau County Pest Control provides environmentally friendly and long-term solutions for your termite troubles. They also ensure that their termite removal techniques are non-hazardous for your family members.

Termites have inhabited the earth since the time of the dinosaurs and helped in maintaining the environment all this while. So, it is our responsibility as humans to co-exist with these tiny insects. After all, they are playing an important role in maintaining the NYC ecosystem as well.

A Troublesome Snail Infestation

September 26, 2017 by Heidy

You may never give too much thought to the possibility of developing a snail or slug infestation but this can occur whenever there are too many inside your home. You might not recognize them but you might see the slug or snails trail.

A Snail Infestation

They are not usually a threat to humans but they are a threat to plants since this is what they like to feed on. The damages that you might find on your plants are one of the many ways that a snail infestation can be detected.

They can become troublesome once inside your home. They can be even more so when they are in your garden or flowerbeds. You can count on Nassau County Pest Control to get rid of this problem for you, that is if this problem is unbearable.

Treating Your Slug Problem

nassau county pest control van

Our New York exterminators will begin by getting rid of the places they like to hide like firewood, flowerpots, lumber, planters and stones. They generally like damp hiding spaces. In fact, this is something that homeowners can do to prevent an infestation of slugs and snails.

If firewood is near your home, remove it and store it off the ground. If you have planters and pots, hang them up instead of sitting them on the ground. Get rid of any lumber or stones that you might have that can develop moisture beneath them.

If you do not have doors that close completely, then you might notice more and more slugs inside your home. Weather stripping can prevent this from occurring.

Our exterminators might even suggest that you have a dehumidifier installed in your damp basement to prevent slugs from finding their way into your home. As you can see, we are more than happy to assist but there are also things that you can do to control this type of infestation from developing.
